Search Engine Optimization ImageYou've spent the time and money to get a web site online. What are you doing to drive traffic to it? If your site is not optimized for search engines, you are missing one of the most important elements of a web site.

Unfortunately, building a presence online isn't as simple as putting up a web site. A great deal of attention has to be given to how people will be driven to your site.

Search engine optimization is a set of practices that attempt to make a web site more attractive to search engines for particular keywords thereby encouraging higher rankings in the natural (non-paid) listings. Search engine optimization (SEO) goes beyond adding keywords to meta tags. A site that will perform best in search engines will be structured correctly, the navigation will be accessible to search engines and the content on the site will be optimized. This includes text, images, meta tags and page title optimization.

The best time to address SEO is with the construction of a new site. A large part of SEO is the structure of the site - how the site is organized. Building a site with SEO being a driving factor sets the stage for the best possible outcome. Existing sites can also be optimized unless they are full Flash sites. For an explanation of why Flash web sites perform poorly in search engines, read my article.

A great deal of attention should also be placed on acquiring inbound links (links to your site from other relevant sites). Inbound links are not the same as reciprocal link exchanges (site A links to site B and site B links back to site A). Search engines see inbound links as other sites "vouching" for your site. They assume that the more sites that link to you, the more important and useful your site must be. It's important to know that only links from relevant sites will help your SEO cause.

Whether it's an existing web site, a site in development or a planned site, I will work closely with you as a search engine optimization consultant, make recommendations and report on the success of those changes.
