With traditional advertising (print ads, mailers, billboards, etc), it's very difficult to track the success of a campaign. How do you really know how many people saw your ad, how many people looked into your business because of your ad or how many actual sales you got directly from that ad?
The great thing about spending marketing dollars online is that you can very easily and accurately track results. Let's say that you purchase a banner ad on a website. You can track how many times that ad was displayed, how many people clicked it and came to your website, what pages they went to, how long they were on your site, if you sold something to that person, if they filled out a contact form or, if they left your site - what page was the last page that they saw. You can see where (geographically) that person is from, what operating system they are using, what internet browser they're using and if they come back to your site more than once.
You can also setup conversion tracking. A conversion is defined as the ultimate goal that you set for a visitor on your site. If you sell things online, then your conversion would be a sale. If you have an 'info request' form on your site, then if someone fills that out, that would be a conversion. Tracking conversions allows you to see what marketing efforts are working and what isn't and how much each conversion is costing you in marketing dollars. If certain areas of your campaign aren't producing the results you'd like or maybe one area of your campaign is doing outstandingly well, instant changes can be made online and money can be shifted, campaigns can be revised, etc. No other traditional advertising forms give you this kind of flexibility. That flexibility combined with a good traffic tracking program is priceless.
