Inbound Links GraphicInbound links (links on other web sites that point to your web site) are very crucial to the success of your web site when it comes to search engine rankings. Search engines see inbound links as a "vote of confidence". Basically, a site that links to you is vouching for you. The more sites that link to your site, the higher the value search engines place on your site. There are some important factors to take note of, but overall it's pretty simple - the more links to your site, the better.

There are several different types of linking schemes - inbound links (one way, site A links to site B), reciprocal links (site A links to site B and B links back to A) and triangle scheme links (A to B, B to C and C back to A). Inbound links (one way links) are going to help your site the most in search engine rankings. Search engines feel that if a site is linking to your site even though you aren't linking back to them, then your site must have valuable information on it. Reciprocal links used to have a high value placed on them but spammers abused them and a Reciprocal link became to easy to achieve for any site. Reciprocal links can even hurt your site now. If you participate in a link exchange with a site that is infamous for Reciprocal links, search engines may look negatively at your own site and penalize you. If you ever get an unsolicited email asking if you'd like to participate in a link exchange, don't. It could hurt your rankings.

It's also very important to note that inbound links from sites relevant to your site are going to help the most. An inbound link from a site that has nothing to do with the products or services offered on your site isn't going to help your rankings much. It could even hurt them. Getting one way links from sites related to your business can drastically improve your rankings in search engines. Even just a few links can help your site rise up in search engines.

There are many ways to attain inbound links. Put information on your site that people want, create some kind of tool on your site that people find useful (ex. a lot of mortgage companies have mortgage calculators on their sites), write articles that other sites in your industry might link to, keep a blog, offer podcasts, submit your site to directories, list your site with local business listing sites, etc. There are hundreds of ways to attract links to your site and each link you get will help boost your site in search engine rankings. It's a very tedious task, but the affects can be well worth it.
